EPFO Update 2026: 7 PF & UAN Services You Can Now Manage Online From Home

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is expanding its digital services to make common provident-fund tasks easier for members. Several services that previously involved employer or office intervention can now be handled through the EPFO Member Portal and UMANG app, subject to eligibility, Aadhaar authentication and KYC requirements.

A key recent change is that UAN activation and generation for existing members can now be completed through Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT) on UMANG. EPFO has also discontinued direct UAN allotment and activation through the Member Portal itself.

This digital shift can make PF management more convenient for employees while reducing dependence on physical paperwork and office visits.

What’s Changing?

1. UAN Activation Through UMANG

Members can now activate an existing UAN using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication through UMANG. The process is designed to allow members to complete activation themselves using a smartphone.

EPFO says the FAT-based process can provide access to services such as passbook viewing, KYC updates and online claim submission after activation.

2. UAN Generation Has Become More Digital

Members can generate a UAN through the UMANG app using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication. EPFO’s Member Portal currently states that the earlier direct UAN-allotment facility on the portal has been discontinued.

This can simplify onboarding for employees who need a UAN for their PF account.

3. PF Withdrawal Claims Can Be Filed Online

Eligible members can submit online claims for PF withdrawal, advances and other applicable benefits through the EPFO Member Portal or UMANG.

Online claim submission generally requires an activated UAN and appropriate KYC, including Aadhaar and bank-account details.

4. PF Transfer After Job Change

Members can manage eligible online PF transfer requests when moving between employers.

EPFO’s UAN system links multiple Member IDs to a single UAN, helping consolidate PF records. In eligible cases, PF transfers can also be triggered automatically after a new employer’s contribution is received.

5. KYC Details Can Be Updated Online

Members can submit or update eligible KYC information associated with their UAN, including details related to Aadhaar, bank account and PAN, subject to EPFO’s verification requirements.

EPFO has also removed the requirement to upload a cheque leaf or attested bank-passbook image for online claims when the bank account seeded with UAN has been validated by the bank/NPCI. Employer approval is also no longer required for bank-account seeding under the specified process.

6. Passbook and Claim Status Can Be Checked Online

Members can view their PF passbook, contributions and balance online. Claim status can also be tracked without visiting an EPFO office.

The EPFO Member Portal also provides access to the UAN card and other account information.

7. E-Nomination and Member Details Can Be Managed Digitally

Members can submit and update e-Nomination online using Aadhaar-based e-Sign. EPFO also provides online facilities for certain profile corrections and updating the date of exit, subject to applicable conditions.

EPFO’s current Member Portal also highlights that e-Nomination can be filed and updated during the service period under the EPF Scheme, 2026.

Why This Matters

The move towards digital EPFO services can make PF administration faster and more accessible for employees.

Key benefits include:

  • Reduced dependence on physical paperwork
  • Fewer office visits
  • Easier UAN activation
  • Faster access to PF account information
  • Convenient online claim submission
  • Easier PF transfers after job changes
  • Simplified KYC management
  • Better visibility of PF contributions
  • Convenient e-Nomination

For employees changing jobs frequently, maintaining a single, KYC-compliant UAN is particularly important.

What This Means for Employees

1. Less Dependence on Employers for Routine Tasks

Several member-facing services can now be initiated directly online, reducing the need to depend on HR teams for every PF-related activity.

2. Keep Aadhaar and Mobile Details Updated

Aadhaar-based authentication is increasingly important for accessing digital EPFO services. Members should ensure that their mobile number and other required details are correctly linked.

3. Complete KYC Before You Need to Withdraw

An incomplete KYC profile can prevent or delay online claim submission. Members should verify their Aadhaar, bank and other applicable details in advance.

4. Check Your PF After Changing Jobs

Employees should verify that their previous employment records and PF balance are properly reflected under their current UAN.

5. Keep Your Nomination Updated

Members should review their e-Nomination details, particularly after significant changes in family circumstances.

6. Use Only Official EPFO Channels

EPFO warns members against sharing their UAN, password, Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or OTPs with unknown callers or websites. EPFO also states that it does not ask members to deposit money.

How to Access EPFO Services Online

Members can generally use two primary digital channels:

EPFO Member Portal

The Member Portal provides access to services such as:

  • UAN account management
  • PF passbook
  • Online claims
  • PF transfer
  • KYC
  • E-Nomination
  • Service history

UMANG App

UMANG provides access to EPFO services from a mobile device. EPFO currently directs members to use Aadhaar-based Face Authentication through UMANG for UAN activation and generation.

Challenges to Monitor

Despite the move towards digital services, members should watch for:

  • Aadhaar and UAN data mismatches
  • Incorrect bank details
  • Incomplete KYC
  • Missing date of exit
  • Multiple UANs
  • Incorrect personal information
  • Portal maintenance or temporary service interruptions
  • Delays during system migration or verification

EPFO recently stated that it completed a major database consolidation and software upgrade and that member and employer services were being brought live in phases, with additional verification checks during the stabilisation period.

What Businesses & HR Teams Should Know

The increasing digitisation of EPFO services also has implications for employers and HR departments.

1. Maintain Accurate Employee Data

Incorrect names, dates of birth, Aadhaar details or employment records can create problems when employees use online PF services.

2. Ensure Timely PF Compliance

Accurate monthly contribution reporting and timely ECR filing remain important for maintaining employee PF records.

3. Support UAN Accuracy

HR teams should encourage employees to provide their existing UAN rather than creating duplicate UANs when they change jobs.

4. Help Resolve Data Mismatches

Where an employee’s EPFO and Aadhaar information does not match, the issue should be corrected through the appropriate process.

5. Improve Employee Awareness

Companies can reduce repetitive HR queries by educating employees about EPFO’s online services, KYC requirements, nomination and PF-transfer processes.

Wisecor Business Perspective

The latest EPFO digitalisation highlights the growing importance of technology-enabled payroll and statutory compliance.

For businesses, accurate employee master data, timely PF contributions, correct UAN mapping and proper payroll records are essential to ensure that employees can access EPFO services without unnecessary complications.

A well-managed payroll process can therefore support both statutory compliance and a better employee experience.

Wisecor Advisory Note

EPFO’s expanding digital ecosystem means employees can increasingly manage important PF-related activities without visiting an office.

Businesses should ensure that their payroll and HR processes maintain accurate UAN, Aadhaar, bank, contribution and employment records.

Digital PF services are convenient but accurate data and timely compliance remain essential.
